Here’s what happened…
Sitting in the cafe yesterday talking to my friend Cheri Torres about how everything boils down to relationships. This is an area in which she’s done a ton of study and the depth of her knowledge is astounding.
My brain was still trying to grasp the implications of her statement, which essentially meant that my mind whirled around a few times, created an internal whirlwind, puffed and few times and spun itself into something resembling a small tornado before spring out over the ocean of my thoughts and taking a nose-dive.
All the while I sat there, smiling with interest and finally my mind caught back up with the conversation, just as she was getting to her point about how there is this division that is created when we engage in the current limitation of one culture “co-opting or appropriating” another’s traditions, language or societal aspects.
I knew what she was talking about because I live in a small city that sometimes feels over-run with earnest people trying not to step on each other’s cultural toes. There are factions who believe quite firmly that if you are of European descent you should not participate in sweat lodges, other groups who feel that you can’t wear traditional jewellery or do dances from a culture that is not…
